The Passing of Officer Jacai Colson – End of Watch March 13, 2016

Today, we are reminded again by tragedy that the men and women of our police department put their lives on the line each and every day for our safety and protection.  Yesterday, Police Officer First Class Jacai Colson was killed in a gun battle with perpetrators who engaged in a heinous and unprovoked attack on the District III Police Station.  Officer Colson valiantly moved to protect his fellow officers once the station came under attack.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the entire law enforcement community.  Officer Colson will be remembered for his courageous actions, his dedication to serving his community, and his bond with his brothers and sisters in law enforcement.  Please see the press release below from the Prince George’s County Police Department for more information.

Suspect Ambushes Officer Outside Police Station; Officer Fatally Wounded

Prince George’s County Maryland sent this bulletin at 03/14/2016 11:10 AM EDT

The Prince George’s County Police Department is grieving after one of our officers lost his life in the line of duty this afternoon. Four-year veteran Police Officer First Class Jacai Colson was assigned to our Narcotic Enforcement Division. The 28 year-old detective was fatally wounded after exchanging gunfire with a suspect outside the District III station which is attached to our headquarters in Palmer Park.

The preliminary investigation reveals a suspect opened fire outside the front doors of the station around 4:30 pm. POFC Colson returned fire. Colson was shot and died a short time later. The suspect was also struck. He is expected to survive and remains under police custody at an area hospital.  Charges are pending. A second suspect was taken in for questioning. Investigators are working to determine the motive in this case.

Our department is eternally grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of support from our community, the law enforcement family and our elected leaders.

Tell Governor Hogan to Support Job Creation in Prince George’s County – Support the Prince George’s County Regional Medical Center Act

Tell Governor Hogan to Support Job Creation in Prince George’s County – Support the Prince George’s County Regional Medical Center Act (SB324/HB309)

Our state legislators in Annapolis are working with county leaders to make a new state-of-the-art Regional Medical Center, in partnership with the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), a reality! Five years ago, the State, County, and UMMS struck a deal to share in the costs to bring this $645 million facility to Largo, which would replace our current Prince George’s Hospital Center and reinvigorate health care in the county. It is also estimated that this Regional Medical Center would create $3 billion in overall economic activity due to all of the related jobs and business growth that would occur. But here is the problem: Governor Larry Hogan has yet to fully commit to the full state funding required to make this important jobs and health care priority a reality. Our state leaders in Annapolis are stepping up and have proposed the Prince George’s County Regional Medical Center Act (SB324/HB309), which would mandate the state’s funding for this important priority. Will you join me in supporting this important legislation? Your name will be sent to the Governor to show your strong support for this job creating project for our County.

The Passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

I join millions of Americans in mourning and extending family condolences on the passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, but I am appalled at Senators McConnell, Ted Cruz and so many other Republicans who are already attempting to nullify the constitutional responsibility and duty of my President to appoint Justice Scalia’s successor. Gentlemen, have you no shame?

It is the responsibility of the Supreme Court to decide many of America’s most contentious cultural issues in accordance with the United States Constitution.  To leave the Court with a paralyzed number of eight justices for nearly  a year for purely political reasons is irresponsible and harmful to our democracy and judiciary.

Response to the Sexual Abuse of Children at Judge Sylvania Woods Elementary School

As public school parents, we are shocked and outraged that allegedly a school volunteer and child predator abused a growing number of our young people – our babies – who we entrust into the care of our schools each and every day.  This monstrous and destructive conduct is the worst betrayal of the trust that our young people should have in the adults who are responsible for caring for them.  We are praying for the victims of these terrible crimes and their families.  We have confidence that Dr. Maxwell, the leadership of the school system, and our public safety partners will take this issue head on, holding anyone accountable who allowed this vile conduct to occur and change or enforce any policies that need to better protect our kids.

We also acknowledge that the alleged crimes of this one person do not change the fact that there are countless numbers of responsible school personnel and volunteers working each and every day to make our schools better places to learn.  Let us all be vigilant in the education and protection of our most precious treasure – our children.

County Leaders and Residents Support the Prince George’s County Regional Medical Center Act

County leaders are united in supporting the Prince George’s County Regional Medical Center Act (Senate Bill 324), sponsored by Senate President Mike Miller and (crossfiled by) Speaker Mike Busch, which would mandate previously committed state funding for building the state of the art Regional Medical Center at the Largo Town Center Metro Station, which is projected to be a catalyst for nearly $3 billion in county economic activity.

Post: Prince George’s community hopes for GSA ‘game-changer’ to spur growth

“In years past, there wasn’t great planning done for a number of Metro stations,” said council member Mel Franklin (D-Upper Marlboro). “It reflected the attitude that the county did not see Metro stations as development magnets. We’ve changed that view and direction.” County officials are seeking to stimulate jobs and economic development on the Southern Green Line Corridor.

Special Snow Emergency Update #2  January 25, 2016

An Update from County Councilman Mel Franklin

Prince George’s Rising is a countywide newsletter designed to empower communities with key information and issues of concern. It is my honor to serve you on the Prince George’s County Council. Prince George’s County Emergency Snow Update #2 – The Big Dig Continues (Thank You for Your Patience)

The majority of our region continues the process of digging out from this historic snow storm.  I know many of you are anxious to get back on the roads and on with the normal pace of your daily lives.  For your own safety, please be patient with our snow removal process.  If you do not need to be on our roads today for emergency reasons, please remain off of the roads.  According to our Snow Information Center, as of 2PM today, primary roadways are approximately 95% passable.  Passable means conditions which would allow a passenger vehicle to negotiate the travel path using reasonable care.   Plows are moving into residential areas right now; it is estimated that 35% of our residential roads are passable.  So, there is quite a bit more work to be done on our residential roads, but progress is on the way.  PGCPS has just announced that it will be closed on Tuesday.  The County received nearly 2 feet of snow.  And, since Friday, over 300 vehicles have been working around the clock to remove this unprecedented snowfall.  As a reminder, please park only on the even side of the road and don’t abandon vehicles in the roadway.

Problems with the Prince George’s County Online Snow Removal Request Process Corrected

As Prince George’s County continues its snow recovery process, the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) and the Prince George’s County 311 call center discovered a technical problem with the County’s online snow removal request form and plow tracking system.

The Prince George’s County Office of Information Technology has corrected this problem. Residents who want to submit online snow removal request forms should go to http://countyclick.princegeorgescountymd.gov/ and click on “Submit Request for Snow Removal” at the top of page.  Citizens only need to provide their email address and the location that needs plowing. The snow removal request type is already pre-populated on this form.

Residents can also submit snow removal requests by calling 3-1-1 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or to the Snow Information Center at 301-350-0500.  Prince George’s County has requested for residents to be patient and to wait 48 hours after the storm has stopped, which is approximately at midnight tonight, Tuesday, January 26, 2016.

Unfortunately, the plow tracking map continues to be unavailable.  As an alternative, The Department of Public Works and Transportation is advising residents that they can visit http://www.pgctrip.com/ to view County traffic cameras and updated information.

**Please Help A Neighbor**

A number of our neighbors are physically challenged in doing their own snow removal.  If you have vulnerable residents in your neighborhood who are in need of removing snow from their property, please lend a helping hand.  We are all in this together!

Prince George’s County Emergency Winter Update: Major Snow Event

The National Weather Service projects that a high impact winter storm will affect Prince George’s County and the surrounding National Capital Region beginning Friday (today) mid-day and lasting through Sunday.  Heaviest precipitation is expected Friday evening through Saturday evening with a mixture of snow and sleet.  All snow is expected to begin Saturday night and end Sunday. Temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the weekend. Residents are reminded to take precautionary measures for heavy snow, high winds, wind chill and coastal flooding. A total accumulation of 18-24 inches is the current prediction, and there is also the potential for power outages.

Road Conditions

When a snow emergency is declared, the Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for providing “passable” conditions on a network of over 1,800 miles of county-maintained roadways to ensure the safety of residents, citizens, and travelers.  Routes are prioritized for service into categories: primary, secondary and residential. Primary and secondary roads are serviced first to ensure that public safety and other emergency vehicles can travel. After completion of these roads, residential roads receive service. Crews work as long as necessary to clear roadways, which consists of salting, sanding and/or plowing, as warranted by weather conditions.

To assist crews, citizens and residents are requested to:

-Move and keep vehicles off snow emergency routes

-Park in driveways or other off-road locations wherever possible

-Park only on the even numbered sides of roads/streets

It also is important for single-family homeowners or renters and business proprietors to remember that they are responsible for removal of snow/ice from sidewalks abutting their homes or businesses.

With a storm of this magnitude it will take at least 24 hours after the precipitation has stopped to have passable primary roadways.  Passable means conditions which would allow a passenger vehicle to negotiate the travel path using reasonable care.  This usually means that the roadway is snow and/or ice covered and reasonably level.  Clearing in the residential areas will commence immediately thereafter.   We ask residents to wait at least 48 hours after the snow has ended before contacting our Snow Information Center at 301-350-0500 or 311 or SnowComCenter@co.pg.md.us.

Staying Warm

The County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in collaboration with the Prince George’s County Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission reminds residents without heat to utilize one of the local Warming Centers (http://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/sites/EmergencyManagement/Resources/Warming-Centers/Pages/default.aspx) in your community.  (Please call the center to obtain specific hours of operation). Also, any unsheltered residents seeking assistance during the late evening and night hours, are encouraged to call 211 or the homeless hotline at 1-888-731-0999FREE FREE. Counselors will be available to assist with the Prince George’s County’s Hypothermia “Warm Nights” program.

Greg Hall: Gone Too Soon

I am shocked and saddened at the death of community activist and former candidate for State Delegate, Greg Hall.  Greg was a loyal friend and fervently loved Prince George’s County.  Greg showed that what matters most in life is not how you start, but how you finish.  Through faith and family, Greg overcame the adversity of his youth to become a dynamic leader, business owner and community organizer.  Please keep Greg’s wife, children and extended family and friends in your prayers.  Gone too soon, my brother, gone too soon.

MLK Day Statement: A Legacy of Nonviolence

As we commemorate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, I must reflect on the profound experience of my journey to Israel this past week at the invitation of the American Israel Education Foundation. From visiting the Sea of Galilee to the Old City of Jerusalem, I was reminded of the modest yet transformational life that Jesus Christ lived on Earth. Following this example, Dr. King carried the full armor of God into battle as he and the leaders of the civil rights movement led an historic, nonviolent struggle to right the wrongs of freedom and equality under the law that had eluded people of color since the founding of our Republic. Dr. King was joined by many faiths in the civil rights struggle, notably by rabbis and clergy from the Jewish community. This bond between the African-American and Jewish communities flows naturally from a shared experience of struggle, tragedy, and triumph. Let us never forget the words of Dr. King from that Birmingham jail that, “we are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” May we always remember, regardless of race, color or creed, that we are all in this together.
