Council Chairman Mel Franklin Reflects on the Passing of Civil Rights Champion Dr. Julian Bond 1940-2015

The Prince George’s County Council joins with County residents and Americans across the nation as we mourn the loss of Dr. Julian Bond, who passed away over the weekend at the age of 75.  Dr. Bond was a great Civil Rights pioneer, scholar, activist, writer and leader who dedicated his entire life to making the world more fair, more equal, and more hopeful for all Americans.  Whether it was as a founding member of both the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Southern Poverty Law Center; serving as a Georgia state legislator for over 20 years; or leading the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) into the 21st century as Chairman of the Board, Dr. Bond stood up for his stated principle that the “humanity of all Americans is diminished when any group is denied rights granted to others.”  Dr. Bond’s legacy is one far beyond eloquent words or soaring compliments; it is a legacy of fearless activism and social change in the face of daunting and intractable obstacles. His great work for social justice must continue with the next generation of activists, leaders, and all people of good conscience.  We honor the life and legacy of Dr. Julian Bond.
